講義名 Theory in Materials Science
目的

The purpose of this lecture is to present basic knowledge to understand various properties and interesting phenomena found in materials. We will introduce important viewpoints in both physics and chemistry based on the quantum mechanics. Theoretical methods in the condensed matter physics enable us to perform not only analysis of known substances in extreme conditions including high pressures and high temperatures but also design of new materials.

We will review the theory of electrons in molecules and solids and will survey quantum mechanics of many-body systems. The first-principles electronic-state calculations will be explained based on the density-functional theory. Theoretical approaches to understand several topics, e.g. the structural transformation, metal-insulator transitions, superconductivity and magnetism will be given from the view point of materials science. We will demonstrate some examples of materials design.

  11. The density-functional theory for correlated electron systems
教科書 K. Kusakabe and H. Aoki, "Theory in Interacting Electrons vol. I Ferromagnetism", University of Tokyo Press (1998) (in Japanese) or other textbooks will be used.

Interest in the materials science will be encouraged. Theoretical approaches like the first-principles methods are playing important roles in materials science at extreme conditions.
