講義名 Introduction to Engineering Science
目的

The purpose of this lecture is to provide a general introduction to various fields of the "Graduate School of Engineering Science" of Osaka University.

Students will be able to learn the outline and features of the Graduate School as well as research areas and activities of it.

Prof. Masayoshi NAKANO
"Interaction between photons and electrons in the world of molecules" This lecture introduces the concepts of quantum world by exemplifying interaction between photons and electrons in the molecules, e.g., nonlinear optical phenomena and excitation energy transfer.
4/18: Lecture 2
Prof. Yoshishige Suzuki
"From magnetism to the spintronics" What happen if you make a magnet smaller and smaller? This simple questionhas found exciting solution and opened new area of science and technology.
5/9: Lecture 3
Prof. Hiroshi Miyasaka
"Reactions and Properties of Molecules under Laser Irradiation" The molecular reactions studied by ultrafast laser pulse and the properties of molecules induced by laser irradiation will be discussed by introducing basics photochemical processes as well as recent investigations of molecules and lasers with spatial and temporal resolutions.

Prof. Masahiko HIRAO
"Resonance, then and now" Chladni studied resonance modes of a metal plate 200 years ago. The same is now obtained with laser-Doppler interferometer for determining elastic moduli of solid materials.

"Computer Aided Layer Manufacturing - New Manufacturing Method" Fundamental concept of layered manufacturing and recently developed computer aided layer manufacturing methods such as Stereolithography, Selective Laser Sintering/ Melting etc. are explained.

"Optimal adaptation in mechanical and biomechanical structures" Outline of the mechanical adaptation by remodeling in bone structure and the geometry adaptation of truss structure in adaptive structure concept.

"Superconducting Electronics" A Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) is the most sensitive magnetic sensor. It can detect biomagnetic signals from brain and heart. It can also be applied to non-destructive evaluation.

"RSA Cryptosystem" RSA, an algorithm for public key encryption, uses the mathematical fact that factoring a product of two large prime numbers is difficult. Let us examine it.

"Science of Statistics" Statistics is said to be a kind of science, technology, and art. An interesting aspect in Statistics will be shown by some real examples.

"Introduction to Augmented Reality" Augmented reality is a new kind of human-computer interaction technology which allows users to interact with digital information in the real world. This lecture will introduce to the augmented reality with some demonstrations.

Prof. Y. Inoue
"Birth of Chaos" "Chaos" is a new concept that has both properties of regularity and irregularity. In this lecture, some episodes on discovering chaos are introduced, and the strange properties are proposed.
